2020: A year like no other

There is a beautiful story in Mahabharata called the Yaksha Prashna. It appears in the Vana Parva, and scripts a question-answer dialogue between Yudhistira and Dharma disguised as Yakshya Baka (crane).

In one of the questions, Yaksha asks: What is the greatest mystery of life?

The greatest mystery, says Yudhisthira, is that even though death strikes every day, we continue to act and think as if we are immortal.

The story is both metaphorical as well as philosophical. It also highlights the unpredictability of life.

The year 2020 reminded us yet again, how unpredictable life can be.

This was a year when we realized that despite the huge strides mankind has made in science and technology, we continue to remain as vulnerable as ever, susceptible to death in great numbers from a single sweeping disease, in the same way mankind has suffered throughout history.

Markets, in many ways, are a reflection of life – mysterious, uncertain, and almost impossible to predict.

2020 proved that yet again. While no one had expected the steep decline in March, very few anticipated the sharp recovery that followed afterwards.

Thankfully, for the full year, the markets returned strong. Key benchmark indices gave double digit returns, with mid & small-caps returned to action after 2 years of hiatus.

Our portfolios did extremely well this year, with both long-term as well as short-term portfolios significantly outperforming all the major market benchmarks.

2021, we expect, will be eventful.
